Educational Initiatives

While learning tennis on court, HJTEP student-athletes are also hitting the books. Through our Learning Resource Center, we support and urge our youth to excell academically, to complete high school and attend college. Every child is required to maintain a GPA of 2.0 in order to remain in our program.  However, our students generally average a GPA of 3.1.

Wellness

The cornerstone of HJTEP’s wellness initiative is the Tennis Against Obesity (TAO).  This program is designed to help students, parents, and schools recognize and combat the growing obesity epidemic. TAO has four keystones: fitness, nutrition, discipline and fun.

Tennis Programs

For the past 50 years, our renowned youth tennis program has offered urban youngsters the chance to learn an unfamiliar sport and sharpen their skills on and off the courts. Participants transition from the Grassroots and Futures levels and up through to the Tournament Level. Our top level players are selected to participate on the Jack Shapiro Tournament Team. Registration includes an interview and a skills evaluation to place each student in the correct level.
